Turnout for year 3 was great - 105 competitors and water temp was 74 degrees. Congrats to overall champions Jenny Shaughnessy and Patrick Woodruff!

The 3rd Annual 5280 Swim at Falls Lake is scheduled for May 22, 2011. It will run as a standalone event. In previous years it was run in conjunction with the Beaverdam Triathlon.

The 2nd Annual 5280 Swim at Falls Lake was held on April 10, 2010. Water temperature was 67 degrees and there were 59 finishers. Kevin Herlihy of Durham was the male winner, in 19:38, and Kim Rice of Durham was the female winner in 20:45.

A USAT membership is required to participate in this race. An annual membership is ($42.00) or a one day $12 membership. This provides you with additional insurance coverage for each race. You can visit www.usatriathlon.org for more information on memberships.

Sanctioning and insurance:

All races will be sanctioned with USA Triathlon. You must be an annual member of 1-day member. One day licenses are available for $12, available during the sign up process.

Age limits

You must be 13 or older to compete.

Wetsuit rules:

Wetsuits will be allowed in accordance with USA Triathlon rules. If the water temperature is 78 degrees or below, wetsuits will be allowed. Between 78-84, wetsuits will be allowed but will not be scored. Over 84 degrees, no wetsuits. No exceptions!


Entry fees are $27 until 2 weeks prior to the event, and $37 thereafter. All swimmers must be a member of USA Triathlon. One day licenses are available for competitors who are not annual members for $12. Sign up through the specific race pages on the left.

50% of your entry fee will be refunded up to 14 days prior to the event. No refunds will be issued for any reason after 14 days. Event entries are not transferable between persons, events or years. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made to this policy. By registering for this event you agree to these refund terms. To request a refund you must complete the refund request form using this link.

In the event of inclement weather the following procedures will be followed:

1. The event will be delayed 45 minutes in hopes the inclement weather will pass.

2. If inclement weather does not pass in 45 minutes, the swim will be cancelled and a 50% credit will be issued for all registered participants into the 2010 event. No refunds will be issued if the event is cancelled due to inclement weather.

3. If the event is cancelled due to inclement weather prior to event weekend, a 50% credit will be issued for all registered participants into the 2010 event. No refunds will be issued if the event is cancelled due to inclement weather.


The top five males and females will receive overall awards. The top 3 in USA Triathlon age-group categories (5 year increments) will receive awards (no duplication). USAT Wetsuit rules will be in effect.


Specially designed t-shirts will be given to competitors who sign up 2 weeks prior. We will do our best to provide t-shirts to everyone who signs up, but if you sign up in the last two weeks we won't guarantee a t-shirt.

Entry limits:

Entries are limited to the first 250 entrants per event in 2009.

Rain/Weather dates:

There are no make-up dates. We will only cancel an event if absolutely necessary for the safety of participants.

Why open water?

We are big fans of open water racing and training, and while North Carolina has plenty of triathlons, we don't have a lot of organized open water races. We're changing that!
